Beauty and the Dad

It’s somewhat hard to get out and enjoy a Saturday when you’re tethered to a crib and a sleeping Coley Bear. Because of this, we started up dates with Kate: one parent takes Kate out, while the other stays at home with Junior. It’s a nice compromise and seems to keep us all happy.

Miss Kate and her daddy got to see Beauty and the Beast this past Saturday. And when Dave suggested her favorite for lunch, The Olive Garden, she declined. She had to go to the place where they have fortune cookies. beauty and the beast 4beauty and the beast3

Kate was especially pleased with the roses they left on our seats (reminding us to renew our annual passes to the theatre); I’m pretty sure she thought those flowers were put there just for her.

Dave bought Kate a rose-shaped souvenir purse. When Kate got home, she informed, “This purse is just so special, Mom. Now whenever I see it, it will remind me of my date with dad.”

Yep, I’d say this date thing is going pretty well.

St. Patty’s

Lenny the Leprechaun was not going to make his debut this year. He had seriously considered visiting our house. But after a little more thought, decided St. Patty’s was kind of a non-holiday, and that maybe it was too much effort. And really, how many traditions does one family need anyway?

Well, when Kate came home from a birthday party on the Big Green Day, she was bummed! Her friend Jack had a leprechaun visit his house, and why on earth didn’t a leprechaun visit hers!? Alas, Lenny scrambled…The mom dug out some old rainbow yarn from her teaching supplies, and the dad dropped by the bank for some gold coins. Because Kate was with him, the dad had to write a note with his request and slyly slide it over to the teller (surely, there were some red flags going off in the teller’s mind). Dave assured me that he gave her a few winks and smiles, so the transaction went smoothly.

That night during bath time, Lenny visited. Dave came running in saying, “Kate, you’ve got to see this! There was a leprechaun in our house!” Kate SCREAMED she was so excited (which, by the way, made it all worth it). We quickly got the kids dressed in their jammies and then followed the rainbow that winded all through the house.St Patty's 021

Kate insisted Lenny be thanked with a note (she dictated, the mom wrote):St Patty's 056I think he felt appreciated. And I’m sure he’ll be back.

Big Boy

I came into Cole’s room the other day.

I saw the sweet little boy on the left, but was instantly reminded of a picture of that same baby boy (taken just 16 months earlier)…

When You Sing You Begin With Do-Re-Mi

Kate is enchanted by musicals…

-At 3, we took her to see The Lion King the Musical. She watched without a hitch and at Curtain Call remarked, “I want to watch it again.”

-Spiderman: Turn Off The Dark…obsessed. She hasn’t actually seen it, but has viewed online videos of it multiple times. She got her own CD of it and needed to know what was happening in the play during each song. She now likes to give the entire play-by-play of the show to the two people who have actually seen it.

-Playtime for Kate: a microphone, stuffed animals, and one big talent show.

-Last year during singing time in Primary, it was noticed that Kate knew the words to “I’m Trying To Be Like Jesus.” When asked if she could recite the words aloud, she gladly accepted the invitation and took the stage by standing on her chair and performing the entire first verse.

-Recently Kate decided that instead of being a doctor (as originally planned), she now wants to be a “performer” when she grows up…
Huh.
“And my first show I’ll be in is The Sound of Music.”

Only a few examples, but you get the idea. The Mom and Dad decided that her aspirations are worth working toward (after all, Julie Andrews isn’t the worst role model) and signed her up for a musical theatre class, which she’s been in for a couple of months now.

Yesterday was “Master Class”; which means just a regular class, but where parents were allowed to watch. Kate single-handedly selected and performed the song “Do-Re-Mi.” Being the youngest in her class and first to perform, she was not scared at all. She started a little off-note, but quickly found her place and brightened up the room with her smile and sweet voice.

Oh! She was so proud of herself, which is so fun for a parent to see in their child. And, of course, we are so proud of her too.

Flowers are apparently “a must” after any and every performance. Yesterday morning, after reminding her about Master class, she asked, “Am I going to get flowers?” Good thing she said something or the Mom might have spaced that one.

Such a beautiful, talented girl! Can’t believe a four-year-old is capable of such big things!
