Famous

I've had fun dabbling in the Etsy business. I'm hardly a successful seller, but it's a fun challenge for me while I'm at home with the kids to think up and create items to sell.

A most exciting and unexpected event happened from early November through mid-January. My Shave and Play Barbie white elephant gift was spotlighted on a website called, "Thisiswhyimbroke.com." It increased traffic to my shop like crazy and I made substantially more sells than my norm.

Every day over the holidays I was in a rush, and up to my arms in Barbie hair, making these stupid dolls! Even Dave had to be hired as my mail manager. I wanted to call it quits and just relax, but Dave kept encouraging me. We kept on keeping on and it was even KIND OF fun (in retrospect). The sales have since died, but it was a fun little memory in 2015 for us!

Kate's Christmas Performances

Kate joined Alpine Community Theater for kids. She's had a fun year singing and performing on stage. And we've loved watching her do what she does best.

She performed at both the Dickens Festival and the Festival of Trees over the holidays. It was a busy few weeks of practices and performances, but it all paid off. Both sets of Grandparents were able to come watch Miss Kate as she glowed on the stage! We're so proud of our little star!

Christmas

Well, Max's first Christmas began with him waking up at 10:30am. But, boy was he in a good mood once he awoke from his long winter's nap!

Santa did well. He always frets that he doesn't get enough, or the kids won't be into their toys, but all the gifts were a hit. Cole maxed out on Star Wars-themed legos and toys, and Kate checked off Shopkins and Mi World toys from her list. Max got his walker that he immediately took to and enjoyed practicing his walking.

We let the kids' toys lay out in the basement for most of the week to be played with and enjoyed; that was probably my favorite part about Christmas!

Another great part was watching the two older kids deliver 12 Days of Christmas Gifts each night. The image of Kate ringing the bell, with Cole nervously waiting at the bottom of the steps, the instant scurrying to the back of the house, and then the two of them trudging through knee-deep snow in snow boots, with dogs barking wildly at them in the darkness of the night...those are some memories I hope to never forget!

SLC Holiday Sleepover

This year's annual holiday sleepover with Dave's fam went down at the Grand America Hotel. We chose THE coldest night of the season to be in the out of doors viewing Christmas lights. We went from one indoor venue to the next and tried to catch a glimpse of lights in between. Cheesecake Factory for dinner and the Grand's breakfast buffet were pretty much the highlights.

Halloween

I don't think I'm a largely competitive person, except when it comes to Halloween. We've been the crowning champs at our ward's Halloween party for several years now and I wasn't about to give it up this year!

This year's theme, The Little Mermaid:
Aren't we cute?!

I figure we only have a few years here where we can force our kids to join in, so why not? And don't get me wrong, we still have to compromise. The kids still get to do their own costume thing for school parades and trick or treating; they just have to follow orders when it comes to the ward party.

L: Sebastian, Evie from Disney's Descendants, and Wallup, the Skylander
R: Our sideways Costume Award

Dave popped popcorn on Halloween night for the second year in a row. We've steadily increased the amount of trick-or-treaters we get each year. Last year we got 200 something people (I'd have to look at last year's blog post for the exact amount). This year, we lost track early on at 200. We figure 300+ trick or treaters so it was a very busy night!

Happy Birthday, Cole!

Cole turned 5!!! How this day happened so quickly I'll never know! Two things the birthday boy would NOT budge on: Chuck E. Cheese and a piƱata. Funny kid! We managed to secure those two things and I think he had the most perfect birthday because of it! Side note: the video of Cole in the ticket booth above was JUST HILARIOUS! What a goofball! You'll have to take my word for it.

Why Cole is our superhero: sweet as I'll get out, obedient to a tee, and the most easy-going kid we'll surely ever know as parents. His peace-making ways keeps our little family going strong!

San Franny Fall Break

We were going to be outdoorsy and visit Bryce National Park for Fall Break. A few weeks before, our senses kicked in (and remembered we’re not at all outdoorsy) and we instead booked a trip to San Francisco. Sure am glad we did! I am a big city kind of girl through and through. I’m not sure Dave enjoyed it as much since he was the driver in that crazy city, but we all had a blast!

Our first night there we had just enough time to visit the Oakland temple and visitor’s center. Gorgeous grounds! Like...breathtaking. After the temple, we hit up the famous Fenton’s Creamery (as seen on Disney’s “Up”). There was a heckuva lot of people, ZERO parking, and an awful long wait, but it was totally worth the experience.

Day 2: We got our “OUTDOORSY” on and hit the forest: Muir Woods, which is small redwood forest. Siri got lost navigating us there (like the turd she is), but we eventually found it! We did get to see some unique multimillion dollar homes in the mountains of Mill Valley so getting lost was bitter sweet.

The redwoods were tall and majestic and we got to enjoy some hot chocolate in the middle of the forest. No huge, drive-thru redwoods here, but we were impressed still. Also impressive, was how this place looked EXACTLY like the forests of Endor. We didn’t see any ewoks, but it still was mine and Dave’s favorite part of the trip. The only downside was the lack of parking. We had to hike with 3 little people, mind you, like a mile of roadage to get to the entrance. A national monument should have a national monument-sized parking lot, don’t you think?

Following those glorious trees we went the the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito. They’ve rescued like 20,000 some odd sea animals I think they said. Cool as all this sounds, it was a bit of a snoozefest. Nothing too fantastic about this place, except that it was FREE dollars.

Lunch at the Outback, and then on to the aquarium. Max loved the fishies. I loved watching him love the fishies. Not a bad aquarium for being so small space-wise. We got to pet sting-rays, hold a skink, and see sharks so we’ll give the place 2 thumbs-up.

Next was Pier 39, Kate’s favorite part of the trip. Who doesn’t love the ocean breeze in their hair, tourist shops, souvenirs!?!

Everything today was magical, including the drives over the Bay and Golden Gate bridges. To finish off a great day, we hit the BEST pizza restaurant in South San Francisco. I’m still dreaming about it (see in pics above).

Day 3: the Sabbath. Like all other vacations before, we visited sacrament meeting to start off our day. It was an unfortunate ward, with odd characters, and even a man named Joseph Smith. No joking, folks. Still a good experience, but made me grateful for our home ward.

Afterwards, we changed our clothes, and made mom her happiest by eating crab cakes at Houston’s like the good ol’ Pasadena days.

We forged on with full bellies and played at the Exploratorium, which was Cole’s favorite part of the trip. This is a hands-on science museum right on the coast (it actually lends out many of their exhibits to Thanksgiving Point as a matter of fact). It was a little huge and exhausting doing experiment after experiment, but the kids enjoyed themselves.

A cow's eye ball we got to watch being dissected...
AND a mash-up of Ashley and Dave…Dashley, if you will.

Next we went to the original Ghirardelli for some more treats. The line was long, probably not worth the wait, but hey, we can check it off of our to-do list now. After eating, we took a stroll along the nearby beach, which really made the visit worthwhile.

We finished the day with a boom, seeing Alamo Square and former residence of the Tanner family (Full House). Oh, how special this was for my current 8-year-old daughter, and my former 8-year-old self! Anyway, fun experience. Then, with a little
take-out from the hotel’s restaurant for dinner, we called it a night.

Last Day: The Golden Gate Park (kind of like New York’s Central Park). First, we tried to visit the Conservatory of Flowers, which was closed. Boo. Instead, we visited the San Francisco Botanical Gardens there, but drooled over the Academy of Science Museum that was just across the way and cost $40/person (instead of the free admission we enjoyed at our less cool attraction). I swear the yells and squeals of delight from that place were echoing through our ears no matter how far away we walked. Didn’t matter that we were poor anyway, we didn’t have time to explore it. Our flight left in just a few hours. So we enjoyed the fearless squirrels coming right up to us, the geese poop on our shoes, and the pretty gardens around us.

Lunch at In-n-Out, a flight next to the drunk dude that blasted his own music through the entire duration of the flight (“Love Is On the Way, I Can See It In Your Eyes…”), and we were home! Such a fun, successful, memory-filled weekend with our little people! San Francisco is really so much better than a national park!

Daddy Daughter Campout

Kate got to go CAMPING!! Her one wish (besides getting a puppy) finally came true! It was a cold night up AF Canyon with the rest of the daddies and daughters from our ward, but they survived!

Women's Conference

Kate and I scored tickets to Women's Conference! We got to go with Mary and Holly Seaquist, and Casey Cameron from our ward. It was a fun night getting to see it all in person with my little girl!

After some wonderful talks (my personal fave was Uchtdorf's), and some beautiful sights, we ate dinner at the Little America restaurant. It was nice to spend some time with just the girls, since we're so often surrounded by all boys at our house. I hope Kate will always remember how special the night was, and will always recognize how important the gospel of Jesus Christ is.

Cornbelly's is the best thing that ever happened to Utah County...except when you go in October, in which case it's the worst thing ever and pure chaos! But hit it right when in opens in late September, and it's MAGIC!

This year was particularly fun, we did two new things: the zip line and the bull rider. Another great video for another day: Cole attempting the zip line. He wanted to do it more than anything! I knew once he got up high, he'd change his mind. I was right. He became UNGLUED! As in, his screams sounded like his toes were being sawed off one by one by a sliver-infested popsicle stick.
Luckily, he had his mom up on the tower with him and I wasn't going to let his fears dictate his actions. With a little help from the worker, we managed to pry his tiny fingers off the holding rail and pushed him off on his way. Shrill, terrorizing screams ended abruptly and the boy was happy and enjoyed the ride down. The kid can't wait to do it next year. Kate, of course, did just fine. And Max, too, down below waited patiently and contentedly.
And here we are each taking a turn playing cowboy. This ride was another Mr. Cole can't wait to do again!

Until next time (in September)...nice knowing you, Cornbelly's!

Soccer Shout Out!

This little boy was the star of his soccer team! I mean, check out his after-soccer hairdo! Proof in the pudding that he played HARD! Each game he scored a minimum of one goal and a maximum of 5 I believe! Who knew we athletic genes floating around in this family??!! So proud of our Coley Bear!

Swiss Days

We took the kids up to Swiss days for one-of-a-kind yodeling and authentic Genevan food. It was kind of like visiting Disneyland and the Matterhorn, only not at all like that.

We took the AF Canyon route to get there. Dave made one remark about needing gas and Cole was beyond nervous the whole way there that we'd be stranded on a mountainous cliff and worse...being preyed upon by bears. Spoiler: we made it there just fine! We even made it all the way back through Provo Canyon before filling up. Turns out the kids MUCH preferred the faster, less scenic route. So did the parents. We'll go the Provo Canyon way from now on;)

Lots of crafts and fried foods were enjoyed. It was fun to be Swissian for a night.

First Day of School Pics

A new school year begins. Kate, grade 3 with Mrs. Jordan at Cedar Ridge Elementary; Cole, preschool part 3 with Mrs. Thompson at Alpine Elementary;
and Max at home with mom. 100% certain our kids are the cutest and the smartest.

Eruptions

It’s been a hard juggle balancing a newborn and two older turdlings this summer. The older two have been total fire and ice! I dusted off the teaching files and even EDUCATED my children trying to unify them. It was a big fat fail. Fun, but failure nonetheless. READY for school to start in 2 days!!
